Day of Liberation Hymn
by Revd FW Killer
On 1st February 2012 the choir met at Georgetown Methodist Church in order for the BBC to record a special hymn that was written by the Revd Frank W Killer at the time of the Liberation of Jersey in May 1945. Revd Killer was the Vicar of St. Mark's Church in St. Helier at that time and was first sung on the 8th May 1945, the day before Jersey was finally freed from the Occupation. We recorded the following verses to the tune ST. FRANCIS (LASST UNS ERFREUEN) and the result can be listened to here
The hymn was first sung by choir members in June 2011 on BBC Radio Jersey see here
1. The sword is sheathed-
The conflict past-
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Raise high your songs of victory
Shout: for the Lord hath made us free,
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
2. Fair islands of the Channel Sea
Greet well this dawn of liberty
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Peal forth sweet bells that all may hear
Your joyful message ringing clear
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
3. For hands unfettered we rejoice,
In freedom's speech we raise our voice
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Let Jersey's hills and valleys ring
With songs of peace re-
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
